What we use, and what you can expect
A filling is one visit. A crown is two, about two weeks apart, with a temporary crown in between.
Fillings
- Tooth-colored composite, never silver
- Numbing that we check before we start
- Done in one visit, usually under an hour
Crowns
- Porcelain or zirconia, shade-matched to your teeth
- A temporary crown the same day
- A fitting visit, with the bite adjusted until it feels right
Not included
- Implants: we refer to an oral surgeon and handle the crown after
What sets your share of the cost
We check your plan when we confirm your visit, so the estimate is your share, not a guess.
Your plan
Most plans pay 70 to 80% of a filling and about half of a crown, after your deductible.
The size of the filling
Priced by how many surfaces of the tooth it covers, one to four.
The crown material
Zirconia for back teeth, porcelain where it shows. Same price either way.
What's left of your yearly maximum
Most plans cap what they pay each year; a crown late in the year can go past it.
Without insurance, fillings are $160 to $310 and a crown is $1,150.
A crown, and a bill that matched
“Dr. Brennan printed the estimate with my insurance share before she touched the tooth. Two visits, the crown fits better than the old one, and the bill was the number on that paper.”

Before a filling or a crown
- Will I be numb for the rest of the day?
For two or three hours after a filling. Book a morning visit if you have a lunch to get to.
- Can you replace my old silver fillings?
If one is cracked or leaking, yes. We don't replace sound ones just for looks unless you ask, and we'll quote it first.
- Why two visits for a crown?
The lab makes it to fit your tooth exactly. The temporary in between protects the tooth and looks like the real thing.
